President Halonen to serve on High-level Advisory Group for Every Woman Every Child

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has today announced the nomination of President Tarja Halonen as an alternate Co-Chair of the High-level Advisory Group for Every Woman Every Child. The Group will be co-chaired By Ms. Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile and Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn, Prime Minister of Ethiopia. The other alternate Co-Chair is Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of Tanzania.

The announced Chairs and other members of the Group will help provide leadership and inspire ambitious action for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health during the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the universal Sustainable Development Goals agenda. “Women, children and adolescents are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “Continued commitment, leadership and action will be critical to achieving our goal of ending all preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents by 2030 and enabling them to reach their full potential.”

The High-level Advisory Group will advise the Secretary-General, guide the transition of the Every Woman Every Child movement and the newly launched Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, and will link to other advocacy or advisory groups to encourage collaboration and integration with relevant areas of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The members of the Advisory Group were drawn to include global representation from government, the business community, philanthropists, young people, civil society and multilateral system and reflect the diversity of the Every Woman Every Child movement.
